What Day Is It? (On Embracing Christmas Break…)

It’s really hard for me to take breaks. I don’t like feeling like I’ve been idle, and usually, I’m busy with something: blogging, writing, reading, running, organizing… The list goes on and on.

It’s especially hard for writers to take breaks. After all, we’re told that we must WRITE EVERY DAY. That real writers write. That we have to meet our word counts.

But sometimes, we need a break.

You need a break. I need a break.

I haven’t written anything over the Christmas holidays.

I’ve spent my time visiting with family and friends. Reading through my alarmingly large pile of books, and watching Season 2 of The Crown.

Sometimes you just need to give yourself permission to slow down for a while. You’re not a failure of a writer if you take a break. Writing is an amazing, wonderful calling.

But it is not all.

So take a break. Don’t feel guilty about it. Relish the freedom.

And get back to writing when you feel refreshed and rejuvenated.
